Spent 4 hours cleaning a rusted tailpipe on a 2002 Civic
Last Saturday I was at Pull-A-Part in Phoenix and found a 2002 Civic with a perfectly good muffler but the tailpipe was caked in rust. I spent 4 hours with wire brushes and vinegar getting it clean enough to weld back on my own car. Now I'm wondering if that kind of time is worth it for a $40 part or should I just buy new next time?

Man I'd do the same thing, just hit it with some rust converter before welding.

@the_morgan knows what's up. Rust converter is the way to go before welding. Done that exact thing on a beater truck of mine. Felt like a champ when it held up through winter.

Four hours for a $40 part? Bet you could've bought a whole new aftermarket tailpipe in the time it took, but there's something about saving a perfectly good part from the crusher. Sometimes the satisfaction of fixing something beats the price tag.
