That rust hole behind the bumper trim that ate my whole weekend
I was fixing a dented bumper on a 2012 Civic I got cheap, but pulling the trim off showed the real issue was a rust hole spreading up the quarter panel. Everyone I know says to grind and patch it, but at 14 years old and 190k miles, is it worth more than scrap price? Anyone else find hidden rot that flipped their trash or treasure call?
That quarter panel rot on a 2012 Civic is a death sentence, not a fixer upper. By the time rust eats up past the trim line, its already into the wheel arch and the rocker, and grinding that out means cutting and welding real metal, not slapping bondo over it. Add 190k on the clock and a cheap rebuild and you are looking at $1500 in body work alone to save a car worth maybe $2500 running. You end up with a car nobody wants to buy because the rust comes back in two winters anyway, plus you burned every weekend. Sometimes trash is just trash, and a cheap Civic with hidden rot stays a cheap Civic with hidden rot.
