Dropped $80 on a career coaching session and got more value from a free Reddit thread

I paid for a 45-minute call where the coach basically told me to network more, but a random guy on the ITcareer subreddit walked me through fixing my resume formatting and landing a specific certification. Has anyone else found free online forums way more useful than paid advice?

Did you actually go into that coaching call knowing what you wanted to get out of it though? I think paid advice can be really hit or miss, but a lot of times the problem is people go in expecting the coach to just hand them a job. If you bring specific questions and ask for actionable steps, it works way better than a random free thread. Free forums are great for quick fixes and general tips, but a good coach should be pushing you past your comfort zone and holding you accountable. I've seen plenty of bad advice on Reddit too, stuff that works for one person but totally backfires for someone else. Just saying, don't write off the whole paid thing because of one bad experience.

@linda500 nailed it with the "hit or miss" thing. I dropped $60 on a resume rewrite that made it worse, then a guy on a forum fixed it in two sentences for free. Paid stuff feels like a gamble every time.
