TIL my old way of asking for a raise was basically begging

I used to just ask my boss for more money and hope for the best. After a talk with a mentor in Austin, I now bring a one page doc with three specific numbers: my last year's wins, the market rate for my role, and the exact dollar amount I want. I got a 15% bump last quarter by showing my value, not just asking for it. How do you guys build your case when it's time to talk money?

That one page doc is the move, right? Shows you mean business. @lisak26, hinting about inflation is like hoping they read your mind.

My buddy did that and got a way bigger raise than he expected.

Sounds like a lot of work for a chat with your boss. I just mention inflation and hope they get the hint.
