Warning: going freelance without an emergency fund nearly broke me

I spent 3 years cleaning houses for a company making $15 an hour, then jumped into my own business with only $400 saved up. Got hit with a slow month and a client who ghosted me on a $600 payment, and I was eating rice and beans for 2 weeks straight. Anyone else make the mistake of starting out too lean and regret it?

Did your slow month hit right after you started, or was it a few months in when you thought you were in the clear?
