My boss swore by a 2x4 spacer trick, and I've been eating my words for a month

Back in March, my foreman Dave told me to stop using a tape measure for cabinet face frames and just cut a 2x4 scrap to the exact spacing between doors. I laughed at him, called it lazy, kept measuring each gap like I always did. Took me 6 hours on a kitchen in Austin to get three doors perfectly aligned while he finished his side in 4. When I finally tried his trick on the next job, it was embarrassingly simple, you set the block and shim once, then every hinge lands the same. Now I feel stupid for fighting it so long, but I still think his method only works if your saw cuts square, which mine finally does. Anyone else get handed a tip that made you question your whole approach to layout?

Saw something on a construction forum about this exact thing, they said it's the same reason framers use story poles for studs instead of remeasuring every time. Once your saw is dialed in, block tricks just make sense, it's basically a homemade jig.
