Overheard an old timer at the lumber yard say something that changed how I measure twice

He said to always mark your first measurement with a pencil dot, not a line, because lines can throw you off by a 1/16th or more. I tried it on a cabinet build last week and my joints came out tighter than ever. Has anyone else heard this trick or got other measuring hacks?

I always thought a line was precise enough, but after trying the dot method I feel like an idiot for all those years of fighting with gaps.

What did you switch to for the dot method? I used to do the same thing with lines and it drove me nuts. Then I tried just making a small dot in the middle of each tile before I start. It sounds too simple but it actually works way better because you're not guessing where the middle is. For me it eliminated most of the gap issues I had with shower tile.
