Just watched my neighbor roll out shag carpet in his garage workshop
He says it's to deaden the noise from his table saw. I bet it'll be clogged with wood chips after his first cutting job.

My cousin's garage almost went up because of oily rags piled in a corner. That smell still haunts me.

Reminds me of when my uncle lined his shed with old blankets to quiet his generator. He figured it was a cheap fix for the noise. But just like @nancy500 pointed out, it turned into a fire trap after some oil leaks. A small electrical short caused a blaze that took out half his tools. The fire marshal said the blankets acted like kindling. He uses rubber mats now, much safer.
