My uncle swore by getting store brand canned tomatoes instead of name brand for pasta sauce.

He said the store brand is the same stuff just cheaper, but I tried it last week and my sauce came out watery and bland. Anyone else think the brand actually matters on certain things?

Kelly_nelson95 makes a good point about whole peeled tomatoes, that's the way to go. My aunt used to say the same thing about store brand canned beans - she swore they were no different. Then one time I grabbed a bag of store brand rice and it turned to mush after ten minutes, so now I'm real picky about rice brands. Some things just never work out the same, especially when texture matters.

Well I've been using the store brand from Aldi for years and never had that problem. Their tomatoes are thick and not watery at all. Maybe you got a bad batch or the wrong kind of store brand. I always look for whole peeled tomatoes and crush them myself.
