Store brand salsa is better than name brand and nobody can change my mind
I used to grab the fancy Tostitos salsa every week, paying like $4.50 a jar. Then one day last month I was broke on a Tuesday and grabbed the Walmart Great Value version for $1.98. Idk what happened but it actually tasted fresher and had more chunks of tomato. I've done a side by side taste test with three friends now and everyone picked the cheap one. Is store brand supposed to be worse or are we just paying for a label? Has anyone else noticed this with other stuff like canned beans or pasta sauce?

My neighbor works at a food plant that makes both store brand AND name brand salsa, and she told me they literally use the exact same vat and just swap labels for the last step. The difference is usually just how long the tomatoes sit in the warehouse before they get processed. Store brands tend to move faster so stuff stays fresher. That's probably why the Great Value one had more tomato chunks. It's like how canned beans from the store brand are sometimes saltier or mushier depending on the batch, but the actual quality is basically the same.

Wait, so store brands actually move faster off the shelves and end up with fresher ingredients? That's wild, I always figured the name brands had better quality control or something.
