Tried store brand canned tomatoes for chili last week and it came out way better than the name brand

I made a batch of chili last Tuesday for under four bucks using store brand diced tomatoes, kidney beans, and some leftover ground beef from the freezer. The tomatoes were actually chunkier and less watery than the Hunt's I usually grab from the Safeway on Broadway. Does anyone else find that some store brand staples like canned goods or spices are just as good, or even better, than the expensive stuff?

omg this is so true. my friend jenna she's super into canning and she told me she did a blind taste test with her husband last year with store brand vs name brand tomato sauce and the store brand one won like almost every time. she said the store brand ones are usually packed at the peak of ripeness because they don't have as much overhead or whatever. now she won't even let her husband buy the expensive stuff anymore lol

lol thats hilarious your friend won the taste test too. my buddy mark did a similar thing with canned beans a couple years ago and the generic store brand blew the goya out of the water. he was all mad about it because he always bought the name brand stuff. now he just gets whatever is cheapest and says he cant tell a difference. the whole "peak of ripeness" thing makes sense though, like with canned goods the quality is usually pretty consistent.
