That $2.50 taco at a gas station in Tucson was better than any restaurant taco I've had
Stopped at a Circle K on Speedway last week because I was starving and broke. Grabbed two of their premade tacos from the hot case for five bucks total. The tortilla was actually warm and the meat had real flavor, not just salt. Has anyone else found decent food at random gas stations that beats the chains?

Heard some food blogger talking about this once, said gas station tacos in the Southwest are slept on because the old ladies making them actually know what they're doing. Made me think about a QuikTrip in Oklahoma where I grabbed a breakfast burrito that had real scrambled eggs and chorizo, not that fake yellow stuff. The thing is chain restaurants have to mass produce everything and make it taste the same across the country, so it ends up bland. Random gas stations don't have a corporate recipe to follow so they just cook it how their grandma would. Plus the turnover is high on those hot cases so the food doesn't sit around for hours like at a Taco Bell. Honestly I trust a well run gas station with a taqueria counter more than most sit down places now.

Random gas stations don't have a corporate recipe" is a bit off, some of them actually do have chain guidelines.

Pulled into a Love's in New Mexico once and grabbed a breakfast burrito that made me question every decision I've ever made at a Taco Bell. @jadew63 is right about the old ladies knowing what they're doing, that burrito had green chile that actually had some heat to it, not that watered-down sauce they charge extra for at chains. Makes you wonder why we bother with sit-down places when the gas station hot case is putting in more effort.
