Why does nobody talk about asking for day-old bread at Panera?

I kept spending like $8 on a sandwich there and feeling ripped off until a cashier told me they sell day-old baguettes for 50 cents at the counter. Now I grab a couple, toast them at home, and make better sandwiches for a fraction of the cost over a week. Has anyone else found hidden cheap menu options at chain places that they never advertise?

Panera's been pulling that trick for years. It's like how Subway has those 5 dollar footlong coupons that nobody talks about unless you're in the know.

Respectfully, @the_john I gotta disagree here. Subway has those $5 footlong coupons posted online all the time, while Panera's tricks are way more hidden and change based on your location.

Huh, reminds me of that time I tried to get a "secret menu" item at a local diner. The waitress just stared at me and said, "We don't have a secret menu. We have a regular menu." Which, honestly, fair point. But anyway, those Panera coupons are weirdly regional too. My buddy in Chicago gets all these deals emailed to him, but here in Phoenix it's just the same old boring stuff. Makes you wonder if they're just trying to see who's paying attention.
