That day I realized I'd been sharpening my knives wrong for 3 years

Was working a busy Saturday brunch service and my chef pointed out my knife was dragging instead of cutting clean through tomatoes. Turns out I'd been holding the angle too steep and ruining the edge the whole time. Anybody else have a basic skill they thought they had down but totally messed up?

Buddy of mine spent four years cracking eggs one-handed, proud of the trick, until someone pointed out he was smashing shells into the bowl every time and picking out pieces with his fingers. Now he has to unlearn the whole habit and start from scratch, which is driving him crazy. Makes you wonder what other dumb habits we've just accepted as normal.

Wait, FOUR YEARS? That's actually insane lol. I can't believe nobody told him sooner, like that's the kind of thing where you'd think a friend or coworker would be like "hey man you're making a mess here" after the first month. The worst part is the unlearning process. Muscle memory is brutal to break once you've been doing something wrong that long. I had a similar thing with tying my shoes until I was like 20 and someone showed me the bunny ears method was actually slowing me down.
