Found a squirrel's winter coat stash in a flue yesterday
I was cleaning a chimney in a house near the woods and pulled out what felt like a small rug. It was a full nest made from a shredded wool blanket, three mittens, and about two pounds of acorns. The home owner said they heard 'scratching' for months but thought it was the old pipes. How do people not notice that kind of activity? I had to clear the whole thing before I could even start the sweep. Ever had an animal home that made you stop and just laugh?

Imagine the squirrel's shopping list. It needed a blanket, some hand warmers, and a ton of snacks. @park.abby is right, we write off the noise, but they're running a whole home goods store in there. That flue stash proves they have taste, grabbing soft stuff and the good food. We hear creaks and think "house settling," but it's probably a rodent interior designer hanging curtains.

Honestly, I used to think people were just being dramatic when they said they had animals in the walls. Tbh, that changed last year when a mouse family moved into my glove box and filled it with dog food kibble. How they got it in there, I have no idea. You really don't get how clever they are until you see their full setup. That squirrel's stash with mittens is next level, it's like they're decorating. Makes you wonder what else we just write off as old house noises.
