Learned the hard way about creosote logs - wasted 3 months of cleanings

I used to throw one of those creosote sweeping logs in the fireplace every month thinking it was keeping my chimney clean. Pulled out my camera scope last week after a customer complained about smoke smell and found this thick crusty glaze buildup that those logs did NOTHING for. Had to scrape for 2 hours straight with rotary tools. Those logs probably made it worse honestly. Anyone else run into this or is it just me that got fooled by the marketing?

Was there any visible sign that the glaze was building up before you scoped it? I'm curious if the creosote log might have been masking the problem somehow (like by making the surface look clean on top). Seems like a nasty surprise to find after months of thinking you were maintaining it right.

Wait, are you saying those logs actually make things worse over time? I used to throw one in every few weeks myself and thought I was being super responsible about it. But now that you mention it, I went to get my chimney inspected last fall and the guy showed me this weird shiny coating on the inside of the flue - he said it was basically baked-on creosote that'd be a pain to remove. I had no idea the logs could be contributing to that instead of preventing it. It's kinda frustrating because you see them marketed as this easy maintenance solution and they're not cheap either. Makes me wonder how many people are out there thinking they're good when they're really just building up a bigger problem down the line.

Switching to a professional sweep twice a year saved me a lot of headaches.
