Sealing the top plate right was the fix for my draft issues

For years, I got calls about drafts after cleaning chimneys. The problem was often a bad seal on the top plate. I started using a heat-resistant silicone caulk on every job. It sets in minutes and can handle high heat. Now, I rarely have to go back for draft complaints. Always check and seal the top plate, even if it looks tight.

Doesn't it always come down to the basics? I fought drafts for months before I sealed the plate, and it was like magic. Your advice should be standard for every chimney job.

Feel your pain with those drafts. My old house had a chimney that whistled all winter. Sealed the plate last fall and now it's dead quiet. Basics really do make all the difference.

Check the chimney cap too. Sometimes the seal looks fine but wind finds another way in. Basic stuff really does fix most problems.
