Sealing the top plate right was the fix for my draft issues

For years, I got calls about drafts after cleaning chimneys. The problem was often a bad seal on the top plate. I started using a heat-resistant silicone caulk on every job. It sets in minutes and can handle high heat. Now, I rarely have to go back for draft complaints. Always check and seal the top plate, even if it looks tight.

From ignoring the mechanic's slouch to actually caring about my posture

I remember when I first worked on bikes in a dusty shed around 2010. We just accepted that a stiff back and sore knees came with the territory. No one talked about setting up your work area to avoid strain. These days, I notice apprentices doing wrist rolls and shoulder stretches before they even touch a tool. It struck me recently when I swapped my old stool for one with proper back support. That simple switch cut down my end-of-day fatigue by a lot. Back then, we thought pushing through discomfort meant you were tough. Now, I see it as making sure I can still enjoy turning wrenches in ten years without hurting all the time.

After a rough season, seeing cleaner outflow water feels like a win

We've been working on a channel dredge job for the past six months. The water coming out was always murky, and we got complaints. Last month, we adjusted our screening process and slowed the pump rate. It took some trial and error, but this week, the outflow is clear enough to see the bottom. That hasn't happened since I started on this site. It's a small thing, but it shows our methods are working. The fish are coming back too, which is a good sign. I'm just glad we stuck with it and didn't cut corners.
