Composted for 6 months, my garden soil test came back worse than my neighbor's chemical-fed lawn

I threw everything in my bin, coffee grounds, veggie scraps, even shredded junk mail, but the $35 soil test from the county extension showed lower nitrogen than his plot. Is homemade compost overrated for small suburban yards, or did I just mess up the carbon ratio for the whole 6 months?

Honestly my first batch came out the same way. Think I was too heavy on the browns, all those shredded leaves and cardboard made it take forever to break down. Next time I just dumped greens in with way less carbon stuff and tested way better after 4 months, so might be worth trying a smaller hotter pile.
