I used to think solar panels were a scam until my neighbor's electric bill hit zero
I live in Phoenix and always figured solar was too expensive and not worth it for our climate. But my neighbor three houses down installed panels last year and I saw his summer electric bill drop from $280 to literally $0 in June. He showed me his app and the net metering credits were piling up. I kept making excuses about roof age and HOA rules but he broke it down with real numbers from his setup. So I finally got quotes from three installers and the federal tax credit cut 30% off the price. I just had them installed last month and my first partial bill was $45 instead of what would have been $190. Has anyone else here been surprised by how fast solar paid off in a specific city?
Honestly, I still can't get over the $280 to $0 drop. That's just crazy, like even with perfect net metering I wouldn't have guessed it could totally wipe out a bill like that in Phoenix of all places. I'm in a much milder climate and my neighbor's bill only went from $160 to about $20, so hearing that kind of number is wild. Ngl, it makes me wonder if my installer just didn't set my panels up right or if it's really that different by location.
Got the same thing here in Tucson, my bill went from $220 to basically zero after I got my panels. I think a lot of it depends on your roof angle and how much direct sun you actually get, even within the same city it can be really different. Maybe your installer had your panels on a less ideal side of the house or something, idk.
