My balcony garden was wilting in the heat, but I found a simple fix.

The strong sun was killing my plants every summer. I learned about shade cloth and put up a low-cost frame, and it helped a lot. How do you keep your garden safe from bad weather?

Learned the hard way that shade cloth can sometimes cause more problems than it solves. It trapped too much humidity under mine and led to a nasty mildew issue on several plants. I've had better results just moving my pots to a different part of the balcony as the sun moves, or using taller plants to create natural shade for the smaller ones. It takes more daily attention, but the air flow is better. For me, blocking the sun directly overhead just wasn't the right answer.

Heard similar things from a gardening podcast, @adam_thompson53, about creating a bad microclimate.

My neighbor's fancy rain barrel setup basically turned his yard into a mosquito nightclub last summer.
