My neighbor laughed at my rain barrel setup (guess who's water bill dropped $40 last month)
When I first put in a 55-gallon rain barrel off my downspout in Phoenix, my neighbor Bob told me I was wasting my time because it never rains enough here. He's been watering his lawn with a hose for 20 years, so I figured he knew better. But after last month's monsoon season, I collected about 120 gallons total and cut my water bill by $40. Has anyone else had luck with small-scale rainwater capture in a dry climate?

Right? Bob sounds like he's just jealous of your savings. That forty bucks adds up over a whole year.

Forty dollars a month is a whole tank of gas for me in my little Honda Civic, @dylan_bell. I've been packing my lunch for three years now and it's saved me almost enough to cover Christmas presents without touching my regular paycheck. Bob should look at the real numbers before he laughs at anyone.
