My solar panel cleaning routine backfired at the worst time
Last month in Phoenix I climbed up to rinse off my rooftop panels after a dust storm, thinking a quick hose down would boost output. Instead I slipped and cracked one panel, and the fix cost me $620 plus two weeks of lower generation. I had skipped the professional service because it seemed pricey at $150 a visit, but my shortcut was the real waste. The installer told me those panels need soft brushes and deionized water, not a garden hose and elbow grease. Has anyone else damaged their setup by DIY-ing something that looked simple?
A buddy of mine did the same thing, hosed his down and ended up with hard water spots that cut his output for months. He pays the $150 now and calls it cheap insurance.
