Shoutout to the 0.5mm chip load trick that cut my aluminum cycle time by 40%
Ran a 3/8 3-flute end mill at 0.5mm chip load on some 6061 parts last week and the finish came out glassy, no chatter at all. Was sure the tool would snap but the Kennametal held up fine across 20 parts. Anyone else running that aggressive on a Tormach, or am I pushing my luck?
You sure that finish is glassy or is it just hiding the runout that's gonna bite you later? Running 0.5mm chip load on a Tormach spindle is asking a lot from a machine that flexes if you look at it wrong, and the tool surviving 20 parts doesn't mean the spindle bearings or the holders are happy about it. Kennametal makes good carbide but no insert saves you from the wear you're putting on everything behind it.
