Talking to a retired toolmaker at the diner about his old Bridgeport mill
He said they'd run a job for 200 parts and just listen to the machine's hum for chatter, which made me realize how much we rely on screens now instead of our ears.

Back when I built my last desktop, I left the side panel off for a week. You could hear the pump gurgle when the liquid cooler started and the faint whine of the graphics card under load. It told you more than any monitoring software. Now it's just a silent box, which is better, but you lose that connection.

Ever try turning off the screen and just listening to the machine run?

Huh, I mean that's a cool idea but it doesn't really work for most computers, @ryanh56. Modern PCs have really quiet fans and solid state drives that make no sound. You'd just be sitting there in silence, which is kinda the point I guess? Maybe it's just me but I miss the old hard drive clicks.
