Found out my $18 burr grinder has been lying to me about grind size this whole time
I was at a local shop in Portland last month and the owner pulled out a micrometer to check his grind settings. He showed me that my cheap hand grinder was giving me a 40% spread between the finest and coarsest particles in a single batch. I went home and ran my own beans through a sieve, and yeah, he was spot on. My pour overs have been tasting muddy and bitter because half the grounds were basically powder while the other half were boulders. I upgraded to a $90 hand grinder two weeks ago and the difference in my morning cup is not subtle at all. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has tested their grinder like this, and what spread numbers you're seeing?
