Just found out my fancy $30 bag of single-origin beans was roasted 4 months ago from a date stamp I missed on the back

Walked into a local roaster in Cleveland and the guy pulled out a bag with a roast date from June and said most shops hide that info, has anyone else checked their labels to find old stock?

The part about "most shops hide that info" really got me, I can't believe they would just sit on old stock like that. Four months is basically stale for coffee, especially if you're paying $30 for a single origin bag that should be fresh. I'm definitely going to start checking labels now, that's just sneaky business.

Most roasts are best around 2-3 weeks off roast actually.

A 4 month old bag for $30 is rough but @rose_cooper I actually think most roasters are just trying to move product not hide things on purpose. Small shops have limited cash flow and sometimes that dark corner shelf gets overlooked. Idk maybe it's just me but I've found plenty of older bags at reputable places and they just mark them down or brew them instead.
