Showerthought: I thought variant covers were a total scam until I saw the numbers on my own pull list
For years I skipped every cover B and C because it felt like a cheap cash grab, but last Tuesday I counted my pulls and realized I had bought 9 of them anyway without noticing. My shop guy Marcus in Sacramento pulled up the print runs and some of these are under 2,000 copies, which is way less than I figured. Do you guys buy them on purpose or just grab whatever is on the shelf?
My buddy Dave in Portland had the exact same thing happen last month. He swore he never touched variant covers, then went through his boxes and found 14 of them going back two years, mostly stuff he grabbed because the main cover was sold out that week. He looked up the print run on a few and two of them were under 1,500 copies, which blew his mind since he paid cover price. Now he checks the numbers before he skips one, because a low print run today can turn into a hard to find book later. Marcus sounds like a good guy for pulling those numbers for you. Did any of your 9 turn out to be worth more than what you paid?
