Figured out I was over-torquing anchor bolts for months

Was helping a buddy on a steel frame job in Denver last spring. He looked at my torque wrench setting and just laughed. Said I was cranking 1/2 inch bolts to 120 ft-lbs when spec says 75. I'd been doing it that way for like 3 years cause nobody ever checked. Felt like an idiot but now I double check the plans every time. Anyone else been humbled by a simple spec sheet read?

That 120 to 75 is a brutal one man. Did you ever check if any of those bolts you overtightened actually had any damage or stretching when you went back with the right spec? I always wonder if stuff like that gets caught during inspection or if it just rides until something snaps.

Pretty sure they just rode until something snapped, @milesj70... never checked mine.
