A quick current check almost got me on a bridge piling job in Tampa Bay

We were doing an inspection on the Howard Frankland Bridge last Tuesday, and I got pulled off my line by a sudden surge I didn't see coming. I had to cut my way out of some old fishing net that snagged me in the low vis, which took about a minute of hard work. What's your go-to move when you get a surprise pull like that?

Wait, are we talking about the same thing here? The post is about a diver getting pulled by a current and snagged, not about cutting a line to skip a queue on a boat. Getting pulled off your line in a current is a real hazard, and your first move shouldn't be to cut your tether. You gotta signal your buddy, try to grab something solid, or go with the flow until you can stop yourself. Cutting should be the last resort when you're actually tangled.

Cut the line and go straight up.

Yeah "cut the line and go straight up" sounds good until you're the one who ends up in the drink like Patricia's uncle lol. I've seen that happen before and it's not pretty. Solid plan until you're soaking wet and everyone's laughing at you. Makes you think twice before trying to skip the queue for sure.

My uncle once cut the line and fell right into the lake.
