My temp controller died right in the middle of a pork butt smoke

I had a 9 lb pork butt on the WSM last Saturday, set my Flame Boss to hold 250, and went inside to prep sides. Came out 2 hours later and the thing was showing 180 degrees in the pit. Turns out the fan connector got knocked loose somehow, probably when I closed the lid. I had to babysit the vents for the next 6 hours to get it back on track. Anyone else have a wireless controller fail at the worst possible moment?

Tried leaving my compost bin uncovered in the rain for a week and the results surprised me

I usually keep my compost bin covered to avoid it getting too wet and sludgy. But last month in Portland we had that dry spell and my pile was bone dry, barely breaking down. So I said screw it, left the lid off during a three day drizzle. Thought it would be a mess. Instead it started heating up for the first time ever and the worms showed up. I learned that my pile needed moisture way more than I thought. Has anyone else had better luck with a wetter pile vs keeping it dry?

That 'cure and seal' my supplier pushed almost ruined my driveway job

I was dead set against using this new cure and seal my supplier recommended for a residential driveway in Phoenix. I figured my old method of wet curing with burlap was fine, no need to change. But last summer, the burlap dried out too fast in the heat, and the surface craced in 3 spots before I even finished. I finally tried the sealant on a small patio last month, and it held up perfect through a 110 degree week. Has anyone else had burlap fail on them in extreme heat like that?

Tried account-based marketing for 6 months, thought it was a gimmick

We rolled out an ABM program at our SaaS company back in February. I was convinced it was just a fancy way to send more cold emails. But after targeting 30 specific accounts in the Chicago area, we closed 4 deals worth $280k total. The personalized content actually made a difference. Has anyone else seen ABM work better for certain industries than others?

Just realized a short run pump can save you hours on a shallow dredge

Everyone says you need a long hose for deep cuts, but on a 6 foot depth near Albany last month I switched to a short run setup and cleared the silt in half the time. Has anyone else found this works better on smaller jobs?

Denim jacket buttons snapped off after 3 wears

Bought this raw denim jacket from a small maker in Portland last month and the buttons started popping off by the third time I wore it. I ended up having to resew all five of them with copper rivets from the hardware store. Has anyone else dealt with cheap fasteners ruining an otherwise solid piece?

They said using undo and layers removes the risk and skill of making a mark you can't take back, but I argued that digital has its own learning curve like color theory and brush control - which side actually builds better artists in the long run?

TIL letting a reman injector sit on the bench too long can cause air locking

Pulled a set of injectors on a 6.7 Powerstroke last Tuesday. Had one reman unit sitting on the bench for maybe 45 minutes while I chased down a stuck glow plug. Popped it in and it fired rough, stumbled bad for a few seconds before it cleared. Guy I work with said the plunger can drain down if they sit upright not submerged. Never had that happen before. Anyone else run into this with reman injectors sitting around?

I finally found a content workflow that doesn't make me hate writing

Last month I spent a whole Sunday rewriting a blog post four times and still hated it. Three years ago I used to just type whatever and hit publish, but my old process was a mess. Last week I tried outlining with bullet points first, then writing each section one at a time without editing. It cut my editing time in half and the post actually read better. Has anyone else found a simple trick that changed how you write?

TIL the old master butchers used to sharpen their knives with a wet stone and a prayer, not these fancy electric sharpeners

Last month I watched a 30 year veteran take a dull boning knife to razor sharp in under 5 minutes using just a flat stone and water at the shop in Portland, and it made me realize how much I've been overcomplicating my own setup with all these gadgets. Has anyone else gone back to basics after seeing old school technique in action?
