Wasted $120 on a fancy cable tester that just beeped at everything
Got a new cable tester off Amazon to speed up my patch cable checks. Plugged in a cable with three broken pins and it just beeped like everything was fine. Found out later it only checks for continuity on four wires, not all eight. Anyone else get burned by a cheap tester that looks professional but lies to you?

Huh, that's frustrating. It's like buying a tire pressure gauge that only checks two tires and calls it good. I've noticed this pattern with so many things these days - tools, appliances, even coffee makers. They look like they do the whole job, but they only half-ass it to hit a price point. That tester probably works fine for a basic home network setup, but for actual professional work it's basically a toy. It's the same reason I stopped buying those "all-in-one" multimeters from the hardware store. You end up spending more money and time figuring out what it actually doesn't do.

You ever had a buddy buy one of those cheap voltage testers that only beeps on live wires but won't tell you if it's 120 or 240? My electrician friend learned that the hard way on a job site.

Yeah "half-ass it to hit a price point" is basically the motto of 90% of Amazon tech right now. I half expect my next "heavy duty" extension cord to only have two wires inside but look like it's rated for a welder. It's almost impressive how they make a tester that looks like it's from NASA but only checks the same four wires my grandpa could have checked with a 9-volt battery and a lightbulb. At least the lightbulb would have the decency to not beep at me when three wires are snapped clean in half.
