Appreciation post: That bull float I almost threw away saved my butt yesterday

I used to hate my magnesium bull float because it felt too light and I thought it was garbage compared to the heavy steel ones. But I got stuck on a big driveway pour in Elmira yesterday where the concrete was setting up faster than I expected. The heat was brutal and I couldn't keep up with the hand tools fast enough. I grabbed that old magnesium float out of pure desperation and it glided over the surface like butter. Finished the whole thing in about 20 minutes flat when I thought it would take me an hour. Now I gotta ask has anyone else found a tool they hated at first but ended up relying on later?

Magnesium floats work better when it's hot like that.

Yeah @taylor_young you're right about that. I was the same way honestly. I bought that magnesium float on sale years ago and it sat in the back of my truck collecting dust because I thought it was too light and flimsy. But that Elmira job changed my mind completely. That concrete was cooking off in like 15 minutes and the float just slid right over it without dragging or tearing the surface. I still grab my steel one for normal pours but that magnesium one is my go-to for hot weather now no question.
