Why I quit using a bull float on driveways and never looked back

I used to bull float every single driveway pour for 10 years straight, thinking it was the only way to get a decent finish. Then about 3 years ago I helped a crew in Austin that only used a roller buggy and a fresno, no bull float at all. The guy showed me how the buggy gets the cream up faster and you don't trap air pockets like a float can. Now I only use the bull float on really big slabs like warehouse floors, but for residential driveways I switched to the roller and fresno combo. My finishes are flatter and I save about 20 minutes per pour. Has anyone else dropped the bull float for smaller jobs?

That whole thing reminds me of how people hold onto old tools just because that's how they were taught. It's like when my buddy refused to switch from a manual miter saw to a sliding compound saw because he thought the old way was more precise. Took him one job with the new one to see he was just wasting time. Tools change and methods change, and sometimes the old way was just the way because nobody showed you a better one.

My uncle swore by his old hand plane until I let him try my new electric one.
