Picked up a beat-up SNES at a garage sale in Phoenix 3 weeks ago...

Found it sitting in a cardboard box with a bunch of old VHS tapes. Paid $20 for it and a copy of Super Mario World. Got it home and it worked but the cartridge slot was finicky. Took me like 4 tries with some rubbing alcohol to get it to boot clean. Now I'm wondering if I should shell out for an HDTV adapter or just stick with my old CRT. Anyone else deal with this?

But honestly, sticking with the CRT is the move unless you want every pixel and glitch magnified on a modern screen. This whole retro gaming thing mirrors life in general, people spend too much time trying to polish up old junk when the raw, messy version works just fine.

People get way too caught up trying to make everything "perfect" when half the charm is in the rough edges. It's like seeing someone spend a whole afternoon trying to fix a scratch on an old desk they bought at a flea market when the scratch was what made it interesting in the first place. Meanwhile, I got friends who won't buy a used phone because the camera lens has a tiny scuff mark on it lol. The older I get, the more I realize most of the stuff we obsess over cleaning up or fixing just isn't worth the stress.
