Appreciation post: my grandpa's ketchup on scrambled eggs, which my wife calls a crime
Three years ago at a diner in Toledo my grandpa ordered scrambled eggs and squeezed ketchup over the whole plate before I could even pick up a fork. I copied him that morning just to be polite, and now I make them that way every Sunday at home. My wife says it looks like someone spilled marinara on a crime scene, but the sweetness cuts the egg taste in a way salt never does for me. Does anyone else have a family topping that outsiders find genuinely gross?
Did your grandpa ever explain why he started doing it, or was it just one of those things he picked up somewhere and never thought twice about? My uncle puts maple syrup on his scrambled eggs and swears it makes them taste like French toast without the bread, which sounds nuts until you actually try it. The real question is whether your wife has ever actually tasted the ketchup version or if she's just judging it with her eyes. Because ketchup is basically tomato, sugar, and vinegar, and people put salsa or hot sauce on eggs all the time without anyone calling the cops. Seems like the crime here is just that ketchup comes from a bottle instead of a fancy jar.
