That time my grandma insisted on putting ketchup on her mac and cheese

My grandma used to dump a whole blob of ketchup on her homemade mac and cheese every Thanksgiving. I thought she was nuts until I tried it last year after she passed, just to see what the deal was. Turns out the tangy sweetness cuts through the heavy cheese in a weirdly good way, especially with the breadcrumb topping she used. Anyone else got a family member with a food combo that actually kind of works?

Used to roll my eyes so hard whenever my aunt would dip her grilled cheese in ketchup. Thought it was this weird old person thing that ruined a perfectly good sandwich. Then one day I was out of tomato soup and gave it a shot out of pure desperation. The sweetness actually balanced out the salty butter and gooey cheese in a way I never expected. Now I sneak a little ketchup on my grilled cheese every now and then when nobody's watching. Still feels wrong, but my taste buds don't care anymore.

Wait, did she put ketchup on it before or after the breadcrumb topping went on? I'm trying to picture if the ketchup got all baked in or if she just squirted it on the finished plate.

Honestly, now I'm wondering if this is some sort of secret grandma cooking hack that we all just refused to see. Like maybe they knew something we didn't about cutting through heavy dairy with a little acid and sugar.
