I used to flat iron everything, now I hardly touch mine
Started doing hair back in 2014 and I was all about that 450 degree flat iron. Straightening every single client no matter what their texture was. Then around 2018 I did a class with a stylist from Portland who talked about working with the natural pattern instead of against it. It took me a solid 6 months to really change how I recommend styles. Now I do maybe 2 flat iron blowouts a week out of 30 clients. The rest get air dry or diffuser routines. Anyone else make a similar shift after a class or a mentor changed your approach?
Man, this lines up with something I keep seeing everywhere. My neighbor spent years fighting his lawn into this perfect golf course look, then quit the weed killer and now it's all clover and wildflowers and he loves it. Same with cooking, my wife used to follow recipes to the letter and now she just tastes as she goes. There's something about getting good enough at a thing that you stop forcing it and start listening to it instead. That class didn't teach you a new technique so much as it gave you permission to trust what the hair already wanted to do.
