PSA: The day a perm went completely sideways

Honestly, last Thursday was a mess from the start. A regular came in for a spiral perm and her hair just would not take the solution, even after leaving it on for the full 25 minutes. It was like her hair was coated in something, but she swore she hadn't used any product. Ended up having to redo the whole thing with a different brand of rods, which took over 4 hours total. Has anyone else had a perm just totally refuse to process on what seemed like normal hair?

Ngl, that sounds like a nightmare. Did you do a test curl on a section first? I had something similar happen once and it turned out the client had used one of those at-home keratin treatments months before and just forgot. Her hair felt normal but it was basically sealed shut.

Oh man, I never used to bother with test curls but that exact thing happened to me once. Now I always check a small piece first lol.

Isn't it wild how we skip small steps until we get burned? I see it everywhere, like people not reading recipes fully before they start cooking. That one bad experience just rewires your whole process.
