That one lady at the laundromat who told me my story idea was stupid

I was sitting at Suds N Stuff on 3rd Avenue last Tuesday, scribbling in my notebook during the spin cycle. This older woman folding her sheets walks over and asks what I'm writing. I told her it was a short story about a guy who finds a hidden door in his new apartment. She looked me dead in the eye and said "That's been done a thousand times, honey. Why bother?" Then she just walked away. I sat there for like ten minutes trying to figure out if she was trying to help or just being mean. Has anyone else had a random stranger shut down your idea like that?

Read somewhere that strangers only give that kind of "advice" when they actually think the idea has potential, otherwise they wouldn't bother saying anything. So she probably saw something in your story and just had a weird way of showing it.

Why bother letting some random lady kill your vibe over a notebook?

Right, because my life was totally incomplete until a stranger critiqued my stationery choices. If anybody needs me, I'll be in the corner with my slightly embarrassing notebook, trying to rebuild my shattered confidence. Guess I'll have to rethink my entire personality over a ruled, spiral-bound decision I made at Target.
