The prompt about the sentient vending machine in the food court

I was at the mall food court in Dayton last Tuesday, scrolling through prompts on my phone while waiting for my kid's pretzel. The one about a vending machine that only dispenses snacks for people who are secretly sad got me thinking. Half the prompts on here are about dark twists or hidden monsters, which is fine, but most real life has quieter weirdness. A machine that just gives you the same soda you always get, but the can is slightly warm, that feels more honest somehow. I tried writing one about a public restroom that only locks when you tell it a secret, and it flopped hard with my writing group. Do you all lean toward the big dramatic hooks over the small unsettling details, or is it just me? Has anyone had luck posting a prompt that was mostly mood instead of plot?

From what I read on a writing blog last week, the small stuff tends to land better with readers because it feels more real. Big monsters are a cheap scare, but a warm soda can sticks with you. Your bathroom secret idea sounds like it has legs, maybe just needs a quieter setup.
