Vent: Tried writing a short story with a 24-hour deadline and crashed hard
Last Tuesday I sat down to write a 5000 word sci fi piece for a contest with a 24 hour window... I got about 1500 words in and my whole plot fell apart because I hadn't planned the ending. Turns out I spent 3 hours on the first paragraph alone, then panicked and scrapped it. Has anyone else had a timer completely backfire on their creativity?

How much time did you spend thinking about the ending before you started writing? I've found that if I don't have at least a solid final scene in my head, the whole thing falls apart once I hit the middle. Deadlines work for me sometimes, but only if I already know where I'm going. Otherwise I just chase my own tail.

Nah, I wing it and figure out the ending along the way.
