I figured the "historic" sign at the dying mall in my town was just marketing fluff, then I found the 1987 directory in a planter
There's a dead mall near me called Northgate that's been half empty since 2016, and the owners hung this big "celebrating our history" banner by the food court that I always rolled my eyes at. Last weekend my kid dropped a quarter in one of those old planters out front and when I reached in to grab it, my hand hit a laminated store directory from 1987 stuck between the liner and the concrete. It listed 94 stores, including a Waldenbooks, a Chess King, and a place called Corn Dog 7 that I completely forgot existed until I saw the name printed there. I went back with a flashlight and found another one from 1994 tucked behind it, and honestly those two yellowed pages told me more about this town than anything the mall ever put on a plaque. Does anyone know if Corn Dog 7 was a regional chain or did my mall just make that up?
