I showed my digital painting to my dad and his reaction was priceless
I spent a week on this detailed fantasy portrait for a contest, and when I showed it to my dad, he squinted at it for a solid minute. He finally said, 'It's very nice, but why is the elf's ear so pointy? Did you use the wrong brush?' He thought I'd made a mistake, not that it was a deliberate style choice for an elf character. It happened right in our living room in Phoenix. Has anyone else had a family member totally miss the point of a piece you worked really hard on?

Honestly... I kinda get where your dad's coming from. Sometimes the classic fantasy stuff just looks weird if you're not used to seeing it.

Looks weird" is a bit much, it's just a style.

Ever try showing someone a picture from a different angle? My mom thought my favorite book cover was super strange at first. I just told her it was like the art from the old stories I loved, and she got it way more after that. Robinp72 has a point about it being a style you have to get used to. Maybe find a way to connect it to something they already know, like comparing it to a movie style? It can help bridge the gap.
