Is uploading at 300 DPI actually pointless for digital art?

I just read a thread on DeviantArt saying that most screens cap out at 72 DPI anyway, so cranking up your showcase files to 300 DPI just makes the file size huge for no visible difference. But then I also see professional illustrators insisting on high DPI for print-ready quality. Which side is right for purely digital display?

Oh yeah, I just stick to 300 DPI for peace of mind even if the screen can't show it.

300 DPI for digital work is kind of overkill unless you're planning to print it later. @claire_wells87 you're just wasting file space and making your computer work harder for no real gain. I've seen people export web graphics at 72 DPI and they look just as sharp as any 300 DPI file on a screen. Does anyone actually notice a difference in real world use or is it just a mental safety blanket?
