That week in May when our email open rates hit 0.4% and I wanted to quit

I was dead set against segmenting our list, thought it was overkill for a small biz. Then 3 days of panic and a client threatening to leave forced me to try it, and our next campaign hit 12% opens. Has anyone else had a bad metric week that totally flipped your strategy?

Pulled a similar panic move after our open rates tanked to 0.6% in March. Turned out our list had 40% dead subscribers from old giveaways. Wrote a simple re-engagement email asking if they still wanted updates, cut 800 names in one day. Next campaign jumped to 8% open rate and my client actually sent a thank you note for the first time in a year. Sometimes you gotta just rip the bandaid off and clean house.

0.4% is rough, we hit 0.7% once and I nearly pulled the plug on everything... same thing happened when I finally broke down and cleaned our dead subscribers, shot up to 9% the next week.

Ripping out the dead weight was the same fix for us. A brutal weekday of scrubbing 500 useless contacts got our opens back to double digits.
