Rust stains after one wash - learned about silverware placement the hard way

I loaded a batch of knives with some spoons last Tuesday and pulled everything out looking like a crime scene. The blades had those orange rust spots right where they touched the spoons. Turns out if you let stainless steel silverware nest together in the basket, the moisture gets trapped and causes a reaction. I had to scrub each knife with Bar Keepers Friend for like 20 minutes to fix it. Has anyone else had this happen with their good kitchen knives?

Bar Keepers Friend for 20 minutes? That sounds brutal. I had a similar problem but caught it after just a few knives got stained. I ended up buying those silicone knife covers for the basket so nothing touches. Saves a lot of scrubbing time.

yeah i saw something similar on a knife forum lmao. they said the silicone covers are a lifesaver but you gotta make sure they're tight or they slide off in the wash. still beats scrubbing for 20 mins tho.
