Pro tip: check your sump pump float switch before the rain hits

Mine got stuck in the 'up' position last week, so the pump never kicked on during a heavy downpour. I had to bail out about 4 inches of water from my Michigan basement with a shop vac. Has anyone found a reliable way to test these without flooding the pit?

Ugh, been there. I just pour a bucket of water in the pit to test mine, which feels like asking for trouble. My luck, I'd trip and flood the place for real.

Feel your pain with that bucket method. I tried something similar last year and nearly created a small lake in my basement. My foot caught on the hose and the whole thing went flying. Now I just stare at the pit and hope for the best, which is probably not any smarter.
