Broke down 40 chickens at the shop before I noticed the joint trick

I been cutting chickens the same way for years. Just hacking through bone with my cleaver. Then this older guy named Pete from the next county over stopped by for some trim and watched me work. He asked why I was fighting the joint when the leg was practically begging to be popped out. Showed me in 10 seconds how to feel for the socket and separate it clean. No bone dust. No dulling my blade. Made me feel like an idiot but my wrist thanked me the next morning. Anybody else stuck in their ways for years before someone simple showed them a better move?

Honestly thought salt was salt until I ruined 3 batches of pickles

I've been doing fermented pickles for about 7 months now, always using regular table salt with iodine. Last week I made 3 jars of cucumber spears and they all came out mushy and weird colored. A guy at my local farmers market in Portland saw me buying pickling cukes and asked what salt I use. He said the iodine in table salt messes with the fermentation bacteria and makes everything soft. I switched to plain kosher salt for my next batch and they came out perfectly crisp after 10 days. Has anyone else dealt with mushy ferments and figured out it was just the salt?

That LRU swap that turned into a 4 hour nightmare over one connector pin

I was working a comms issue on a King Air out of Van Nuys last month and figured it was a bad VHF radio unit. Pulled the old one, slapped a fresh LRU in, and the problem was still there. Wasted a good hour double checking power and ground before I finally broke out the pin extraction tool. Found a single pin in the backshell connector where the retaining clip had collapsed on the last guy's install. It looked fine visually but had no actual contact. Another 45 minutes to extract, replace, and verify that stupid pin. Four hours total for what should've been a 30 minute swap. Has anyone else seen these mil-spec connectors fail internally like that? I'm starting to carry spare contact pins in my tool bag.

Watched a brand new transformer blow up on a Tuesday morning

I was swapping out a meter can for a new build outside Austin last month, and the utility crew showed up to tie in the transformer. They got it hooked up, flipped the switch, and within 30 seconds there was this loud pop and oil spraying everywhere. Turns out they wired the secondary backwards after the test. I just stood there with my coffee while they scrambled to shut it down. Has anyone else watched a utility crew mess up that bad?

AI hiring tool rejected me for a typo in my resume

Applied to a tech company in Austin last week and got an auto-rejection within 2 minutes. Found out later their AI parser flagged my resume because I wrote 'mananger' instead of 'manager' in one bullet point. A human would have brushed it off, but the bot just trashed my application. How many good candidates are getting filtered out over tiny mistakes like that?

TIL my whole dish soap strategy was backwards for 20 years

I always squirted soap directly on the sponge until a buddy who works at a restaurant supply store told me to put it in the sink first and let the water hit it. Tried it with my Dawn last Wednesday and went through a whole bottle in half the time. Am I the only one who had to unlearn this?

Spent $80 on a laser level and it paid for itself in one day

I was laying a long garden wall last week in Columbus and kept second-guessing my lines with a string line. Grabbed a cheap laser level from the hardware store for 80 bucks and got that wall straight on the first try, saved me at least two hours of rework. Anybody else find that spending money on layout tools saves you more than you think?

Drove past a farm in Ohio last week that had a barbed wire fence so poorly strung it was sagging to the ground in three places

I was heading to a job near Dayton and saw this place off Route 35. The posts were leaning every which way and the wire was just draped like clothesline. A few cows were walking right through it like it wasn't even there. I had to pull over and take a picture because it was that bad. How do you let a fence get that neglected? Must have been 20 years old with no maintenance. Has anyone else run into farms like that where the owner just gives up on fence care?

Had a seven flue job last Wednesday that went smooth as butter

I showed up to this old Victorian in Cleveland and the homeowner said three sweeps already turned it down. Got up on the roof and every single flue was clean, just needed a quick brush and vac. Each damper worked perfect too, not a single stuck one. Finished the whole thing in under 4 hours including setup and cleanup. Anyone else ever get a big job that turned out way easier than expected?

Hit 1000 unique login attempts blocked in a single day last Tuesday and it completely changed how much I trust the VPN I had been half-using

Seeing that triple digit number pop up on my security dashboard made me realize my old habit of just using the VPN for sketchy sites was getting me nowhere when half those hits were trying default router admin passwords from the outside, has anyone else felt more paranoid after actually checking their firewall logs?
