Rant: My neighbor's dad showed me how to sharpen a chisel on a piece of plate glass 20 years ago
He just said 'Forget the stones, kid, a little oil and some 400 grit on this will get you there.' I still use that method, but do you think modern sharpening systems are actually better?

Wait, you've been using the same piece of glass for 20 years? That's wild. I'd be worried the surface isn't flat anymore after all that wear. A modern granite plate stays true, but if your glass still works, I guess you're good.

What's better than free and it works? That glass trick is solid, like @the_thomas said, but a granite plate is just a fancy version of the same idea. If your edge cuts wood, you're already there.
